Paul n'est pas né d'hier (1) Paul was not born (of) yesterday
1 Paul se promenait (2) tranquillement dans la foule,
2 quand un homme se baissa (3) brusquement devant lui,
3 et ramassa quelque chose presque sous ses pieds.
4 — Ah! Ça, c'est de la chance! fit (4) l'homme.
5 Et il montra à Paul l'objet qu'il venait (2) de trouver :
6 une bague en or (5), ornée de brillants.
7 — Elle est belle, n'est-ce pas?
8 Ça vaut (6) bien mille ou mille deux cents francs, chez un bijoutier (7).
9 Tenez (8), je veux vous faire profiter dé l'occasion.
10 Deux cents francs, et je vous la laisse!
11 Paul n'avait (2) pas encore prononcé un seul mot.
12 Il regarda la bague — les brillants étaient vraiment bien imités —,
13 puis l'homme, et dit simplement :
14 — Inutile, mon vieux, je connais le truc!
15 L'autre s'éloigna (9) sans insister.		 1 P. was quietly walking among (m) the crowd,

— 12 He looked at the ring — the brilliants were a really good imitation (well imitated),
— 13 then at the man, and merely (simply) said :
— 14 No use, old chap (my old), I'm up to that dodge !
— 15 The other one took himself off without insisting.
