L'heure du dîner Dinner-time (" The hour of the dinner ")
1 Les restaurants ne manquent (1) pas à Paris.
2 Il n'y a que l'embarras du choix :
3 prix-fixe (2) populaires à sept ou huit francs, vin compris,
4 restaurants moyens (3) de dix à douze francs,
5 ou établissements de luxe.
6 Chacun peut (4) choisir, selon ses goûts, sa bourse et son appétit.
7 La carte est affichée (5) à l'extérieur,
8 et on peut la consulter avant de se décider.
9 C'est ce que fait Paul;
il a déjà examiné le menu de trois ou quatre restaurants.
10 Il n'a pas très faim (N. 2), il n'est pas pressé de dîner.
11 On lui a dit que les Français sont grands mangeurs (6) de grenouilles.
12 Il est tout surpris de ne pas encore avoir vu ce plat « national »,
13 et continue à le chercher.		 — 1 Restaurants are not wanting (missing) in Paris.
— 2 There are plenty to choose from
(There is only the "embarassment of the choice") :
— 3 popular restaurants at fixed prices, at 7 or 8 francs, wine included,
— 4 medium-class restaurants, from 10 to 12 francs,
— 5 or "de luxe" establishments.
— 6 Every one may choose according to his tastes, his purse and his appetite.
— 7 The menu is posted outside (at the exterior),
— 8 and one can consult it before making up one's mind.
— 9 This is what P. is doing ;
he has already examined the menu of three or four restaurants.
— 10 He is not very hungry, and is not in a hurry to have dinner (to dine).
— 11 He has been told that the French are great frog-eaters.
— 12 He is quite surprised that he has not yet seen that "national" dish ;
— 13 and goes on looking for it (continues to seek it).

— 7 Si vous manquez d'argent, je peux vous en prêter.		 — 1 What is to be done (is it necessary to do), according to you?
— 2 There is only one (but one) thing to do : wait.
— 3 Wait! that is easy to say; but if the thief is not found?
— 4 That is the business of the police;
— 5 you have surely (well) given all the particulars (details) ?
— 6 I have ; I have told (related) all I know.
— 7 If you are in need of money, I can lend you some.
   
Il ne me manque rien : I lack (or want) nothing.
Vous n'avez que l'embarras du choix : you have plenty to choose from.
Il faut manger selon son appétit : One must eat according to one's appetite.
