Un peu de calcul A little reckoning (calculation)
1 Paul finit son vermouth, et en posant (1) son verre,
2 il remarque que la soucoupe blanche porte une inscription : 1,30.
3 C'est sans doute le prix de la consommation.
4 Ce n'est pas cher. Et quel pourboire (2) donner?
5 — Si je donne vingt centimes, cela fait un franc cinquante juste.
6 — Mais est-ce suffisant?
7 A ce moment même (3), un consommateur voisin
8 est en train de payer le garçon.
9 Paul s'efforce de voir quel pourboire il laisse;
10 mais il n'y réussit pas.
11 Dans le doute, il (4) tend au garçon un billet de dix francs.
12 Le garçon lui (4) rend une pièce de cinq francs,
13 trois de un franc, et une de cinquante centimes.
14 C'est là une indication suffisante :
15 Paul laisse sur la table la pièce de cinquante centimes.
16 Le garçon la prend, en disant : — Merci bien, monsieur		 — 1 P. drinks up (finishes) his vermouth, and (in) putting down his glass,

— 11 In (the) doubt, he holds out a ten franc bill to the waiter.
— 12 The waiter gives him back a five franc piece,
— 13 three one-franc ones and a fifty-centimes one.
— 14 That is (It is there) a sufficient hint (indication) :
— 15 P. leaves the fifty-centime coin on the table.
— 16 The waiter takes it, (in) saying : Many thanks (thank you well), Sir.
