Il faut (1) faire comme tout le monde One must do like everybody else (all the world)
1 Ce qui frappe surtout Paul dans la rue,
2 ce sont (2) les terrasses des cafés.
3 Il n'a pas l'habitude de voir les gens
4 tranquillement installés à boire en plein air,
5 et les regarde avec étonnement.
6 Il fait beau (3) et c'est l'heure de l'apéritif.
7 Il faut se conformer aux usages du pays,
8 pense-t-il (4), et il s'assied à une table libre.
9 A peine est-il assis qu'un garçon s'approche :
10 — Et pour Monsieur?
11 Comme Paul hésite à répondre,
12 le garçon suggère : — Un vermouth-citron?
13 — Oui, dit Paul à tout hasard (5).
14 Et, comme la boisson lui plaît,
15 il se répète mentalement : un vermouth-citron, un vermouth-citron...		 1 What (That which) especially (above all) strikes P. in the street

— 7 One must conform (oneself) to the customs (usages) of the country,
— 8 he thinks (thinks he), and he sits down at a vacant (free) table.
— 9 He has hardly sat down before (at pain is he sitting that) a waiter comes up (approaches himself) :
— 10 And for the gentleman?
— 11 As Paul hesitates to reply,
— 12 the waiter suggests : a vermouth with lemon?
— 13 Yes, says P. taking a chance.
— 14 And, as he likes the drink (pleases him),
— 15 he mentally repeats to himself : a verm.-citr.

— 4 Oui, il fait presque aussi chaud qu'en été.
— 5 Et nous sommes à peine sortis de l'hiver.

— 3 What fine weather we are having for the season!
— 4 Yes, it is almost as warm as in summer.
— 5 And we are hardly (gone) out of the winter.

Il ne fait jamais comme tout le monde : He never behave (does) like everybody else!
Je l'ai dit à tout hasard, ou au petit bonheur : I said it at random.
Je n'ai pas l'habitude de boire : I am not used to drinking.
Ce vin me plaît : I like this wine.
Il fait trop froid pour rester en plein air : It is too cold to remain in the open air.
Il faut rentrer : We must get indoors.
Il n'y a pas à dire : There is no disputing it.
