Paul donne un bon conseil Paul gives (a) good advice
1 — Est-ce la première fois que vous venez en France?
2 — Oui, mademoiselle; jusqu'ici (1), je n'ai pas eu l'occasion de parler français.
3 — Mais vous l'avez étudié longtemps à l'école?
4 — Oui, pendant cinq ans; mais je n'y ai pas appris (2) grand-chose.
5 — Comment! pas grand-chose! Vous parlez couramment (3) !
6 — C'est vrai ; mais depuis (N. 4) quatre mois,
7 j'étudie chaque jour avec des disques,
8 et c'est pour cela que je commence à me tirer d'affaire.
9 — C'est merveilleux! En quatre mois!
10 Moi aussi, je veux étudier l'anglais avec des disques.
11 — Essayez (4), mademoiselle ; je suis sûr que vous réussirez (5) !		 — 1 Is it (this) the first time that you have been to (in) France?
— 2 Yes, Mademoiselle; until now (here), I have not had the opportunity (occasion) to speak French.
— 3 But you have studied it a long time at (the) school? —
— 4 Yes, I have, for five years ; but I did not learn (have not learnt) much there.
— 5 What! (How!) not much ! You speak fluently !
— 6 It is true ; but for the last (since) four months,
— 7 I have been studying (study) every day with gramophone records,
— 8 and that is why I am beginning to get on ("pull myself out of affair").
— 9 It is marvellous! In four months!
— 10 I too (Me too I) want to study English with records.
— 11 Try, (Mademoiselle) I am sure that you will succeed!

— 1 Avez-vous réussi à apprendre le français?
— 2 Pas encore, mais j'ai bon espoir,
— 3 je l'étudie un peu chaque jour.
— 4 Depuis combien de temps l'étudiez-vous?
— 5 Depuis presque deux mois.
— 6 Êtes-vous content des résultats?
— 7 Oui, très content; j'espère parler couramment avant trois mois d'ici.		 — 1 Have you succeeded in learning French?
— 2 Not yet, but I have great hopes.
— 3 I study it a little every (each) day.
— 4 How long have you been studying it (Since how much time do you study it?)
— 5 For (Since) almost two months.
— 6 Are you pleased (content) with the result(s) ?
— 7 Yes, very pleased; I hope to speak fluently within (before) three months from now (here).
   
  Exercice supplémentaire.
— Conjuguer par écrit (in writing) réussir sur le modèle de finir :
je finis, nous finissons, vous finissez, il finit, ils finissent, j'ai fini.
Puis, apprendre et surprendre sur le modèle de prendre :
je prends, nous prenons, vous prenez, il prend, ils prennent; j'ai pris.
  Notons :
Je suis ici depuis huit jours : I have been here a week (eight days).
Il n'y est pas pour longtemps : He is not there for long.
Vous vous êtes bien tiré d'affaire : You got on (or got out of it) all right.
