Un peu de conversation A little conversation
1 C'est le moment du café et des cigarettes.
2 Le vieux monsieur allume (1) un cigare,
3 après avoir demandé poliment :
4 — La fumée ne vous dérange pas, mesdames ?
5 — Mais pas du tout, monsieur; nous fumons nous-mêmes.
6 — Me permettrez-vous (2), mesdames, de vous offrir une cigarette?
7 Paul offre sa boîte de cigarettes anglaises,
8 et les deux dames en prennent chacune (N. 3) une,
9 en le remerciant.
10 — Vous êtes anglais, monsieur? ajoute (3) la mère.
11 — Oui, madame; excusez-moi si je ne parle pas bien le français.
12 — Oh! mais vous parlez très bien!
13 — Je voudrais parler l'anglais aussi bien, dit la jeune fille (4).
14 Paul rougit (5) du compliment,
15 mais ne trouve rien à répondre.		 — 1 It is time for (the moment of) coffee and cigarettes.
— 2 The old gentleman lights a cigar,
— 3 after asking (to have asked) politely :
— 4 Does my smoking (The smoke does not) disturb you, (my) ladies?
— 5 No (But), not at all, (Sir) ; we smoke ourselves.
— 6 Will you allow me (My ladies) to offer you a cigarette?
— 7 Paul offers his box of English cigarettes,
— 8 and the two ladies (of them) take one each,
— 9 (in) thanking him.
— 10 Are you English, (monsieur)? adds the mother.
— 11 Yes, Madam; excuse me if I do not speak (the) French well.
— 12 Oh ! but you speak very well !
— 13 I wish I could (would like to) speak (the) English as well, says the (young) girl.
— 14 Paul blushes at (of) the compliment,
— 15 but can find no reply.

— 2 Pardon, madame, la fumée ne vous dérange pas?
— 3 Mais pas du tout, monsieur; fumez donc.
— 4 Merci, mais je ne fume jamais.
— 5 Alors, pourquoi me demandez-vous?
— 6 Je parlais ( 1 ) de la fumée de la locomotive.		 — 1 In the train.
— 2 Pardon me, Madam, do you object to smoking (the smoke does not disturb you) ?
— 3 No, not at all, Sir; do smoke (then).
— 4 Thanks, but I never smoke.
— 5 Then, why do you ask me?
— 6 I was speaking of the smoke of the engine.
(1) Je parle : I speak; je parlais : I spoke or I was speaking.  
   
Notons pour aujourd'hui :
Je n'ai rien trouvé à répondre : I could find no answer.
Je voudrais une boîte de cigarettes : I would like a box of cigarettes.
