Quarante-quatrième (44e) Leçon  
Que voulez vous boire (1)? What will you have to drink?
1 Paul est assis (2) près de la fenêtre,
2 à côté d'un vieux monsieur décoré, à moustache blanche (3).
3 En face de lui, à la même table,
4 se trouvent deux dames, apparemment la mère et la fille.
5 Un garçon vient de (4) servir les hors-d'œuvre :
6 salade de tomates, sardines à l'huile, beurre,
7 œufs (5) durs mayonnaise.
8 Un autre garçon s'approche et demande :
9 — Que voulez-vous boire, messieurs-dames? (6)
10 — Une demi-bordeaux (7) rouge, répond le vieux monsieur.
11 — La même chose pour nous, dit la plus âgée des deux dames.
12 Paul, qui boit ordinairement (1) de la bière,
13 n'a pas préparé sa réponse.
14 Il juge plus simple de répéter à son tour :
15 — La même chose pour moi.		 — 1 P. is seated near (of) the window,
— 2 by the side (at side) of an old gentleman with a decoration (decorated) and with (at) a white moustache.
— 3 Facing (In face of) him, at the same table,
— 4 are (find themselves) two ladies, apparently (the) mother and (the) daughter.
— 5 A waiter has just (comes from) served the hors-d'œuvre :
— 6 tomato salad, sardines in {at the) oil, butter,
— 7 hard-boiled eggs with mayonnaise.
— 8 Another waiter comes along (approaches himself) and inquires (demands) :
— 9 What will you have to drink, ladies and gentlemen?
— 10 Half a bottle of claret (red bordeaux), answers the old gentleman.
— 11 The same (thing) for us, says the elder (more aged) of the two ladies.
— 12 P., who usually (ordinarily) drinks beer,
— 13 has not prepared his answer.
— 14 He considers it (judges) simpler to repeat in (at) his turn :
— 15 The same (thing) for me.

— 1 Est-ce loin pour aller à la gare?
— Non, c'est tout près ou c'est à côté.
— 2 C'est juste en face.
— 3 Êtes-vous prêts messieurs?
— 4 Les dames ne sont pas prêtes.
— 5 Attendez votre tour.
— 6 Chacun à son tour.
— 7 Il a déjà bu tout son vin.		 — 1 Is it far (to go) to the station?
— No, it is quite close.
— 2 It is just opposite.
— 3 Are you ready, gentlemen?
— 4 The ladies are not ready.
— 5 Wait for your turn.
— 6 Each one in (at) his turn.
— 7 He has already drunk all his wine.
