Qui sont les Duval (1)? Who are the Duvals?
1 Mon ami M. Duval (2) a environ trente-cinq ans.
2 II est employé dans une compagnie d'assurances.
3 II est marié, et a deux enfants, un garçon (3) et une fille.
4 Mme Duval (4) est un peu plus jeune que son mari.
5 Elle s'occupe du ménage, de ses enfants et de sa toilette.
6 Les Duval n'ont pas de bonne; mais une femme de ménage
7 vient (5) chaque jour pour le gros travail.
8 Ils habitent (6) un appartement de quatre pièces,
9 au troisième étage d'un immeuble sans ascenseur,
10 dans une rue tranquille de la rive gauche (7).
11 Ils (6) mènent une vie calme, et restent (6) généralement chez eux (8).
12 Ce sont des petits bourgeois, des Français moyens.		 — 1 My friend M. Duval is (has) about (environ) 35 (years).
— 2 He is a clerk (employee) in an insurance company (company of "assurances").
— 3 He is married, and has two children, a boy and a girl.
— 4 Mrs. D. is a little younger (more young) than her husband.
— 5 She busies herself with the (occupies herself of the) household, (of) her children, and (of) her dresses (toilet)
— 6 The Duvals have no servant, but a charwoman (woman of household)
— 7 comes daily (each day) for the heavy (big) work.
— 8 They live in (inhabit) a four-room flat (apartment of four "pieces"),
— 9 on (at) the third floor of a building without a lift,
— 10 in a quiet street of the Left Bank.
— 11 They lead a quiet (calm) life, and generally stay at home.
— 12 They (This) are lower middle class (some little "bourgeois"), (some) average French people.
   
EXERCICE.  
— 1 J'ai vingt-trois ans.
— 2 Elle n'a pas encore trente ans.
— 3 Il est plus jeune qu'elle.
— 4 Elles bavardent tout le temps.
— 5 Ils n'aiment pas se déranger.
— 6 Ils pensent absolument comme vous.
— 7 Ils arrivent en retard chaque fois.		 — 1 I am twenty-three.
— 2 She is not yet thirty.
— 3 He is younger than she.
— 4 They chatter all the time.
— 5 They do not like to disturb themselves.
— 6 They think just (absolutely) like you.
— 7 They come late every time.
   
Elles bavardent and elle bavarde are pronounced exactly alike;
it is the same with Ils n'aiment pas and il n'aime pas.

But we can detect the plural when we hear :
Ils pensent absolument... , owing to the "liaison" of the final t,
which does not exist in the singular : Il pense absolument...

And similarly : Ils arrivent, instead of Il arrive.
